Abstract

This study qualitatively analyzes how differences in students’ socioeconomic and cultural capital across school districts influence elementary school teachers’ curriculum implementation practices. Drawing on cases of four teachers who have worked in both high-capital and low-capital school districts in Seoul, the research reveals that teachers recognize clear differences in students’ leisure activities, reading and language habits, and academic performance by subject, depending on the district. These differences significantly shape how teachers prepare, deliver, and assess lessons, manage classrooms, and communicate with parents. Specifically, in high-capital districts, students’ higher learning readiness and cultural capital enable creative, in-depth, and inquiry-based lessons. In contrast, teachers in low-capital districts tend to focus on repetitive practice, foundational skill reinforcement, and emotional and behavioral support. This study underscores that curriculum implementation is not a linear delivery process but a situated, practical act shaped by teachers’ habitus, students’ capital structures, and parental cultures. It argues that existing discussions on educational inequality have often been limited to external resources such as facilities and systems, overlooking micro-level variations in teacher practices. By highlighting teachers’ roles as active agents mediating structural inequalities in education, the study calls for greater recognition of teacher agency and offers insights for developing practical interventions to reduce educational disparities, support teachers, and inform teacher training programs.
