Abstract
Graduates from the regional campuses of South Korea’s elite universities occupy an ambivalent position at the intersection of institutional prestige and spatial hierarchy. This marginal location subjects them to persistent structural tensions and contradictory experiences within the system of credentialism. We explore how these individuals make sense of identity struggles and negotiate tensions with dominant discourses of academic meritocracy in contemporary Korean society. Based on in-depth interviews with eight graduates from the regional campus of Yonsei University and employing an intrinsic case study approach, we analyze their narratives. The findings reveal that participants develop a cleft habitus as they navigate the overlapping structures of symbolic capital and spatial stratification, engaging in various strategic practices to manage identity fractures and meet social expectations. By applying the concept of cleft habitus to indirect and micro-level movements within the academic hierarchy—beyond conventional class-based mobility—our study expands the concept’s analytical scope. It also provides empirical insight into how the credentialist structure permeates individuals’ perceptions, emotions, and everyday practices, ultimately shaping their lived experiences.
