Abstract

This study analyzes the experiences of youth born in the 90s working in cosmopolitan fields to examine how cosmopolitanism functions as cultural capital in Korean society. While cosmopolitanism is emphasized as an essential competency in the globalized era, critics argue that it may operate as a mechanism for class reproduction. However, there has been limited systematic analysis of how cosmopolitan cultural capital is formed and operates in the Korean context, characterized by compressed modernization and rapid globalization. Through in-depth interviews with 15 professionals from intergovermental organizations, public institutions, and NGOs, analyzed using grounded theory methodology, the following findings emerged. First, family environment served as a crucial condition in forming cosmopolitan cultural capital, which was further strengthened through educational experiences. Second, this cultural capital created a dual reproduction mechanism: primary selection determining entry into the field itself, and secondary selection determining positions within the field. Particularly, differences in accessible positions based on the timing, context, and depth of cultural capital embodiment led to disparities in facing crises and opportunities, entrenching the field's hierarchy. Third, cosmopolitanism functions as a means of moral distinction, transforming class differences into natural moral superiority, thereby concealing and legitimizing its class-based nature. This study demonstrates that cosmopolitanism is perceived as a universal value — accessible to everyone and regarded as a natural and ideal standard — yet, in reality, operates as a mechanism for class reproduction.
