신라의 대형무덤에서는 화려한 황금장식과 함께 유리제품이 출토된다. 이러한 유물의 원류에 대하여 학계의 많은 연구가 있었다. 그러나 가운데 서역(西域)적인 요소만을 지나치게 강조하여 신라왕족이 동로마제국에서 기원하였다는 가설을 제기한 연구자도 있다.신라의 황금장식은 디자인의 모티브나 제작기법으로 본다면 중국의 북방(北方)이나 서역과 관련될 가능성도 있다. 그러나 그렇게 보기에는 시간적 공간적 차이가 너무나 크기 때문에 오히려 중국 한족(漢族)이나 선비족(鮮卑族)의 금속공예문화를 주목해볼 필요가 있으며 직접적으로는 고구려의 금속공예문화와 연결될 가능성이 높다.또한 중국에는 수많은 서역인(西域人)이 거주하고 있었으므로 이들을 매개로 서역산 문물이 고구려나 신라백제로 이입되었을 것이고, 특히 신라인들은 무덤 속에 유물을 다수 부장하는 풍습을 지니고 있었기에 다른 나라의 무덤에 비한다면 로만글라스(Roman Glass) 등의 유물이 상대적으로 많이 남아 있었던 것으로 해석된다. 이를 두고 로마 유리장인(琉璃匠人)의 이주(移住) 내지는 ‘신라인의 몸에 로마인의 피가 흘렀다’는 등의 설명은 지나친 해석이라는 점을 강조하였다.
Abstract
From the large-sized Silla burial ground, sumptuous golden ornaments and glass artifacts are often unearthed. Many studies have been conducted to disclose the origin of these artifacts. Some of the studies are overly emphasizing the element of Western Regions in the artifacts, and one researcher actually proposed that the origin of Silla loyalty was the Eastern Roman Empire.Judging from their design motif and technique, the golden ornaments of Silla are possibly related to Northern China or Central Asia. However, there are such great disparities in time and space to accept this as a fact. Instead, the metal craft of the Han race or Hsien-pei race of China is more worth to pay attention, and it is also highly feasible that these artifacts are directly liked to the metal craft of Koguryo. Also, since many Western people were residing in China, it is possible that they introduced the their culture to Koguryo and Silla. Since Silla people were especially accustomed to bury a number of articles inside of graves, this may be one of the reasons that for the tombs of Shilla have more artifacts, such as Roman glass, compared to that of other countries. It is overly stretched to presume the migration of Roman glass craftsmen or to describe as ‘the Roman blood was in the body of Silla people.’
