Abstract

The utilizationb o fthe multimedia by students and teachers has become increasingly widespread in recent years. This paper will show the impact of multimedia on English teaching and learningm the focus on the vlaue of multimedia-based language learning activity, and how multimedia-based activities operate in the English classroom based on the educational background such as constructivism and collaborative learning. The paper will discuss what and how we teach English through the multimedia-assisted system and suggest an effective teaching and learning methodology using multimedia tools, especially, Powerpoint, CD-ROM, and Internet, in order to improve students' skills in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Multimedia can arouse students' interest, critical thinking, and learning motivation and the application of the multimedia tools is considered to imply the possibility of changing the standardized English classroom into a lively one. With careful consideration of the problems that come with using the multimedia, the conclusion advanced is that the potential of interactive multimedia for English teaching and learning offers a rich environment for English classroom.
