The purpose of this paper is 1) to show that the Weight-To Stress Principle is in conflict with one of Optimality Theory's tenets, and 2) to recast the principle in accordance with OT assumptions. The paper also shows phonological and phonetic evidence supporting the new constraint, the Weight-Stress. All the evidence suggests that stressed syllables are always heavy in English.
