Abstract
There have been many proposals on double object construction (DOC), but few of them presented its structure that can account for all of its attributes. Trying to make a full explanation of them, firstly we investigate its syntactic and semantic features and then adoptin the lexical relational structure (LRS) analysis (Hare and Keyser 1997) and the Agree-based minimalism (Chomsky 2000, 2001), we propose a structure of DOC. In spite of its strong explanatory force in semantic characteristics of DOC, it cannot figure out some problems in syntactic aspects, such as VP-internal backward binding, gapping, quantifier scope ambiguity. Something new in this paper, if any, is that we tackle the problems of wh-movement and heavy NP-shift not in terms of language generation, but in terms of language comprehension or parsing.
