Abstract

‘Sillageum’, the ancient string instrument that was passed on to the Japanese imperial court from Silla in about 8 to 9th century, has been kept at Jeongchangwon so far. The related artefacts, such as yangidu and sillageumgab, exist but there has been no research to find out about them. This research is intended to enhance the understanding of sin-la-geum through the study of them. The sillageum-related artefacts kept at Jeongchangwon are three sillageums, 1) geumnisillagum, 2) geumbaksillageum, and 3) dongdaesamyeong sillageum; two pieces of yangidu, one complete and the other damaged; and two sillageumgabs, instrument cases for sillagum, the size and the materials of which are first compiled in this research. Among them, the history of geumnisillageum and geumbaksillageum is clearly identified by the record. They are assumed to have been brought there on the 14th of April, 823, along with the existing anjok of four, anjok of six and two sillageumgabs. The sillageum and its related artefacts kept at Jeongchangwon demonstrate that the international exchange between Silla and Japan from 8 to 9th century also involved music exchange. As the silla instruments were introduced to the Japanese imperial court, Silla’s music, its theory and musicians were brought along, which in turn influenced the Japanese imperial court and officials significantly. It could also be pointed out that, since the artefacts at Jeongchangwon were first made in Silla and then brought over to Japan, they enable us to take a peek into the production method and to estimate the technological level.
