한국어 명사구 생략의 통사론 -수분류사 구성을 중심으로-

NP-Ellipsis in Korean: Focusing on Numeral Classifier Constructions

초록

This paper maintains that Korean has NP-ellipsis and that numeral classifiers in Korean are functional heads that can license NP-ellipsis via PF-deletion. A null NP in the numeral classifier context, unlike a pro, allows a sloppy reading, and it also yields an antecedent NP-denoting reading even when accompanied by a possessor argument. This null NP cannot be identified as a null NP pro-form, either, thereby allowing the extraction of an internal argument from its elliptical site, which, in turn, reinforces the claim that Korean numeral classifiers are NP-ellipsis licensors. Numeral classifiers, by licensing NP-ellipsis, exhibit complementary distributions with an NP pro-form kes ‘one’. Such a discussion, furthermore, helps us to tease apart two distinct structural sources of uy-marked numeral classifiers in accordance with their ambiguous readings such as quantity vs. property readings, which hitherto has not been noticed. The patterns that Korean NP-ellipsis manifests are partially parallel to those of other classifier languages.

Abstract
