초록

If scrambling is movement, we run into many problems, including scrambling paradoxes. As an alternative to the movement approach, this article explores the possibility of providing an Agree-based approach to scrambling. Revising Chomsky’s (1986) Visibility Condition under the probe-goal approach, I propose that Case is a probe taking a thematic role as its goal. More precisely, the Case of an argument takes an unvalued thematic role as its sub-feature, and the unvalued thematic role takes the thematic role of a predicate as its goal. An important consequence of the Agree-based approach is that a Case position can be a thematic position: an argument can be assigned a thematic role although it is base-generated in a Case position. This proposal, along with the claim that case assigners move to C in Korean and Japanese, leads to the conclusion that short scrambling is not movement but an output of base-generation. This article shows that the Agree-based approach elucidates various puzzles centered around scrambling, including scrambling paradoxes.
