This paper aims to explore the semantic and pragmatic features of abstract nouns in the Korean language. Based upon the third entities of Lyons’ ontology (1977): complement nouns that refer to propositions. This paper focuses on the nouns that accompany complement clauses’ abstract nouns and investigates their semantic features. By nature, an abstract noun without a complement clause often fails to convey its explicit meaning in a sentence. Its contextual meaning is by looking at the surrounding sentences because of the gap in the semantic structures of those nouns. Abstract nouns can have lexical meanings that can be found in the dictionary and variable meanings that are realized through the context. Abstract nouns can also be used for anaphoric reference. From a pragmatic perspective, abstract nouns can refer to a certain part of a text when they are combined with demonstratives. In other words, they can serve to strengthen textual cohesion.
