Abstract

This study seeks to interpret Queen Jinseong's accession and abdication as a series of interconnected events by focusing on the Silla society's negative perception of women's royal succession and her efforts to secure a male successor. Silla's three queens were exceptional cases, arising primarily to avoid a vacant throne in the absence of suitable male relatives. From the mid-7th century to the mid-9th century, evidence of social opposition toward female monarchs can be observed. Even in King Jeong-gang (定康王)'s testament, male-like characteristics were emphasized in an attempt to mitigate this resistance. The testament of King Heon-an (憲安王) and the case of a royal son-in-law (maternal grandson) ascending the throne suggest that the role of royal daughters was limited to that of intermediaries in succession. These observations imply a close relationship between the negative perception of women's royal succession and the constrained role of royal women in succession to the throne. From the beginning of her reign, Queen Jinseong was compelled to search for a male successor. As the possibility of the King Gyeongmun (景文王)'s maternal grandson (Queen Jinseong's son) being born diminished, she initially designated King Heon-gang (憲康王)'s son-in-law (Hyojong[孝宗]) as her successor. However, she finally selected Yo (嶢), the son born to a concubine of King Heon-gang. Considering that the only abdication in Silla's history was carried out by a woman, and in light of the long-standing opposition to women's succession, it appears to have been a voluntary abdication, it may in fact be understood as a forced deposition. It is possible to interpret that, although Queen Jinseong was a woman, she was compelled to take the throne to prevent a vacancy, and that she was predetermined to abdicate the kingship to a suitable male heir. In terms of the accession of a woman or a son born to a concubine, it could be perceived as a source of confusion or instability. However, there are sufficient grounds to interpret it as an effort to preserve the conventional view on women's royal succession. Therefore, it can be assessed that Queen Jinseong's accession and abdication contained dual aspects.
