Abstract
The study aimed to extract potential characteristics of future scientists based on the results of in-depth exploration of the meanings of learning and characteristics of learning contexts perceived by science gifted students in science gifted high schools. To this end, a qualitative research was conducted to collect data on what meaning science gifted students give to learning in school life and in what contexts they learn. The research participants were 19 tenth graders attending four science gifted high schools. The collected data were analyzed using the six stages of a comprehensive analysis procedure based on pragmatic eclecticism. The results are as follows. First, the science gifted students’ perception of learning was divided into intrinsic and extrinsic values, and they preferred intrinsic over extrinsic values. Second, the learning activities of science gifted students in science gifted schools occurred in contexts where they conducted autonomous learning on their own, contexts where they learned under the influence of teachers, and contexts where they learned with friends. Third, the potential characteristics of future scientists were extracted based on the characteristics of science gifted students’ perception of learning and contexts where learning occurred in science gifted schools. This was shown in the form of expert-level knowledge, identity development, scientific creativity, perseverance and passion, service and communication, and community contribution. In consequences, we introduced individual characteristics exhibited science gifted students who showed potential characteristics as future scientists.
