Abstract
Chosun suffered Japanese pirate raiders’ pillage in its former term so all the necessary diplomatic steps were deadly needed. But Japanese pirate raiders were uncontrolled by makbu, so negotiation often ended in failure. Under such circumstances as these, Chosun regarded Japan as a faithless minor country. This kind of relationship between the two countries were shown in poetry and prose of that time. But in the poetry and prose, there were no aspect of cultural exchange but supremacy over Japanese pirate raiders. It was regrettable that Japanese pirate raiders hindered the cultural exchange between the two.20 The more Japanese pirate raiders plundered Chosun the more necessities were needed to enlighten them. But there was no way to enlighten them so the literary men of that times tried giving poetry and prose to Korean news agencies and let them hand over it to the Japanese royal news agency. The object of enlightenment was supposed to be the Japanese pirate raiders but they were unsubstantial so Japanese king became the focus of enlightenment project. At this point, there were inevitable limitation of enlightenment. This thesis is mainly focused on Chosun’s enlightening aspects of Japan and its basis which were shown in the poetry and prose of the former term of Chosun. Because most of the researches about the cultural exchange between the two countries had an inclination to something concrete. An aspects of enlightenment included Kija and highlighting a peaceful reign by developed civilization. At that time, Chosun enjoyed political stability and a high level of culture so the Confucian ideas mercy, upbringing became the motive of enlightenment. A sense of superiority based on high culture and Confucianism’s priority over Buddhism became the emblem of enlightenment:two nations were the one. The term ‘enlightenment’ is conceptional so it had ideality to calm down the East Sea by enlightenment. There were perfect virtue and circle in its basis.21 Perfect virtue had a tendency to grow all creation like sunlight by moral excellence over military force. According to the universal recognition, Japan is the direction of perfect virtue, it became the theoretical foundation and at the same time the turning-point to reform Japan. Circle is the principles of all things in the universe and it was hoped to be adopted in the cultural exchange between Chosun and Japan. Its practical meaning in cultural exchange was faithfulness but its real function was to help enlightenment work properly. It is meaningless to divide perfect virtue with circle. Perfect virtue is the core basis to develop Japanese humanity on the other hand circle is the supplementary basis to support perfect virtue.
