Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to analyze determinants and consequences for international migration, focusing particularly on the expected wage differentials between Korea and USA. The present study compares expected wages of international migrants in the destinations with those of hypothetical wages if they had not migrated. Our suggested models of the selectivity-corrected returns to various characteristics for immigrants and non-immigrants enable us to estimate the ‘opportunity well-beings’ of individuals and households; that is, the well-beings of immigrants-had-they-stayed and of non-immigrants-if-they-had-immigrated. We found that expected income differential is negatively associated and statistically significant for Korean migration to USA. We suspect that such other reasons as education, quality of life, etc. other than higher wage or employment opportunities may work for Korean immigration to the US. In addition, this result may indicate that the ease or difficulty of transferring skills between countries is the major reasons for this contradicts, since knowledge acquired in formal schooling and skills accumulated through work experience in Korea may not be perfectly transferable in the US.
