초록

본 논문은 국가간/지역간 위험 공유의 정도와 시간에 따른 소비 평탄화의 정도를 동시에 추정하는 실증 분석 방법을 연구했다. 본 논문에서 제시된 추정 방법은 단지 기간간 소비 평탄화만을 연구한 기존 연구와 소비 평탄화에 대한 극단적인 가정을 하거나 이론에 대한 고찰이 상대적으로 부족했던 위험 공유에 관한 기존 연구들을 개선한 것이다. 위험 공유의 정도와 기간간 소비 평탄화의 정도가 한 국가내의 지역간과 국가간에 얼마나 다른지를 분석하기 위해 미국 주들, 경제협력개발기구(OECD) 국가들, 유럽 공동체(EU) 국가들을 대상으로 본 논문에서 연구된 실증 분석 방법을 적용시켜보았다. 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 기간간 소비 평탄화의 정도에 관한 가정에 관계없이, 위험 공유의 정도는 한 국가 내의 지역간이 국가 간보다 크다. 2) 기존의 위험 공유/소비 평탄화 경로 관련 문헌의 분석 결과와는 반대로, (한 국가내의) 소비 평탄화의 정도는 한 국가 내의 각 지역간이 국가 간 보다 크다. 또한 본 논문은 위험 공유와 기간간 소비 평탄화의 경로에 관한 기존 연구의 이론적 토대를 제시하고 기존 실증연구의 한계점을 논의했다.

Abstract

This paper develops a method to estimate jointly the degree of intertemporal consumption smoothing and the degree of risksharing, which improves upon past studies. The method is applied to the US states, OECD, and EU countries to compare inter-regional and international phenomenon. The empirical results suggest that: 1) regardless of the assumption on the degree of intertemporal consumption smoothing, the degree of risksharing within a country is larger than across countries 2) the degree of intertemporal consumption smoothing within a country is also larger than across countries, contrary to the findings of past channel studies.
