이 논문은 1980년∼2012년 OECD 국가들의 자료를 이용한 패널고정효과모형 추정을 통해 각국의 의사 공급이 기대수명, 사망률, 잠재수명손실연수, 유아사망률등에 미친 효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과는 인구 대비 의사 수의 증가가 국민건강에 유의하게 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여준다. 예컨대 1000명당 의사 수1명 증가는 기대수명을 0.7∼0.9년 증가시키고 유아 1000명당 사망 수를 1.8명감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 논문의 결과는 의사 수의 증가가 1980년 이후 장기적인 사망률 감소의 주요 요인 가운데 하나라는 것을 시사한다.
Abstract
By estimating panel-fixed effect model with the OECD data from 1980 to 2012, we investigate how the supply of physicians in OECD countries affects health outcomes, such as the life expectancy, standardized mortality rate, potential years of life lost (PYLL), and infant mortality rate. Our results show that an increase in the supply of physicians has significantly positive effect on population health. It is estimated, for example, adding one physician per 1000 persons is associated with an increase in the life expectancy at birth by 0.7 to 0.9 years and a decline of the infant mortality rate by 1.8 per 1000. Our results suggest that the increased supply of physicians is one of the major contributing factors to the long-term decline of mortality in OECD countries since 1980.
