Abstract
This paper examines the process of creation, growth and resettlement of Koreatown at Wangjing, a subdistrict of Chaoyang District in the northeast of Beijing, focusing on the interfaces among the international political economy and the social institutions of state, market and society in China. We explain how the Government of Beijing Municipality have built the Wangjing apartment complex, how the real estate market in Wangjing was formed and reformed, and how Beijing citizens had responded to the Wangjing development project, 1993-1996. And, we also explain the creation, development, and resettlement of the Wangjing Koreatown in three phases: (1) 1997-2002, (2) 2003-2007, and (3) 2008-2020. At each stage, we analyze the operating mechanisms of social institutions of state, market and society. We conclude by presenting the development prospects in line with unique characteristics of Wangjing Koreatown, as one of the Koreatowns that exist in various parts of the world. We note that Wangjing Koreatown is no more a gathering place for ethnic Koreans including South Koreans, Joseonjok (or ethnic Koreans with Chinese citizenship), and North Koreans, but is now being reframed into an ‘international community’ or ‘international social networks’ where ehnic Koreans, Han Chinese and other foreigners interacting closely in Beijing. In other words, Wangjing Koreatown is being reborn as an area that performs the international function of the ‘global city’ Beijing.
