Abstract

This article seeks to introduce the theory of 'multiperspectivity' which has been established as an important theory for history education in Germany. This theory is primarily linked to the question of what students should be learning in a history class. From the 19th century - when history consolidated its position as a curriculum subject in German schools - to the 1970s, the 'traditional history class' compelled students to learn the so-called 'general knowledge of history.' But this general knowledge of history was in fact nothing more than learning a single perspective which reflected the interests of the ruling elite that dominated all powers of the state. But after the 1970s the 'new history education' aimed to allow the individual student to develop skills that allowed him to think about and to pass judgement on history for himself. 'Historical competence' is defined as the ability to remember the events of the past or to construct a meaning for the past (Sinnbildung) in order to 'orient' oneself towards solving the problems of everyday life in the present and in the future. This ability cannot be developed by forcing a 'single perspective' on the student as it was the case in traditional history classes. It can only be developed by providing opportunities for the student to encounter 'multiperspectives' and to discuss his views freely in class. By learning in class that different, opposing or contradicting perspectives permeate 'historical reference materials' or the writings of professional historians, the student will learn that reference materials or historical writings are not hard historical truths. This will allow him to attain critical consciousness. By discussing his views freely in class, the student will realize that his classmates all have divergent points of view. This will give him an opportunity to reflect on his own perspective. Therefore, history classes based on 'multiperspectivity' provide opportunities to develop critical consciousness - the basis of democracy - as well as to reflect upon and to construct one's own perspective.
