Abstract

The Trinity represents the system of the perception of God in medieval Christianity. However, Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) proposed a concept of God that transcends the Trinity. His understanding was deeply spiritual. The concept of the Gottheit (Godhead), as Eckhart called it, offered a profound theological perspective that remains relevant even in postmodern theology. This article compares differing perceptions of God found in the medieval Trinity, Daesoon Jinrihoe, and Eckhart. Through this comparison, the study identifies key issues within Daesoon Jinrihoe’s concept of God and proposes possible resolutions, drawing on Eckhart’s Gottheit. This is the primary objective of this article. To this end, the perceptions of God in the Trinity and Daesoon Jinrihoe are examined from ontological and operational perspectives. Eckhart’s Gottheit and the path to attaining it are then summarized. Based on this analysis, the three systems-the Trinity, Daesoon Jinrihoe, and Eckhart’s Gottheit-are compared. The comparison reveals shared problems between the Trinity and Daesoon Jinrihoe. It also highlights elements within Daesoon Jinrihoe’s theology that may be compatible with postmodern theological thought. Among the issues Daesoon Jinrihoe shares with the Trinity are the concept of a supreme, hierarchical, omnipotent God; a God bound by causality and retribution; a defined and institutionalized deity; theocracy; and a singular incarnation. These concepts are seen as needing critical re-evaluation. Additionally, the inconsistency between the completeness of Sangje and the incompleteness of Jeungsan in Daesoon Jinrihoe’s scriptures is questioned. Addressing this tension is crucial to prevent the idolization of the human Jeungsan via the scriptures of Daesoon Jinrihoe. On the other hand, from a postmodern theological perspective, the notions of Shinineuido (神人依導 mutual guidance between divine beings and human beings) and Shinjohwa (神人調化 Harmonious Union between Divine Beings and Human Beings) within Daesoon Jinrihoe are valuable theological insights that warrant further development. Daesoon Jinrihoe has incorporated and sought to transcend various religious traditions-a significant and meaningful endeavor. However, if it remains fixed at the stage of having “crossed over,” the transformative energy of that experience risks diminishing. Thus, striving to move beyond even the scriptures of Daesoon Jinrihoe-while remaining faithful to them-could invigorate its theology. In this context, Eckhart’s Gottheit, described as “one (unum) as being itself,” may offer a helpful guide for addressing and evolving the perception of God within Daesoon Jinrihoe.
