Abstract

Pilgrimage, which traditionally began as a religious ritual, has transformed in modern times by merging with cultural tourism and evolving into diverse forms. In premodern Korea, pilgrimage traditions were virtually absent except among a small group of elite religious practitioners. In particular, the Seon (Zen) Buddhist emphasis on meditation and contemplation limited the popularization of pilgrimages to act as a practice of progress towards enlightenment through travel and asceticism. Within this cultural background, new forms of religious practice began to take root in the modern era. Christianity, introduced to Korea in the eighteenth century, overcame persecution to become a major religion, and since the 2000s, it has collaborated with local governments to establish pilgrimage programs connecting more than 170 sacred sites. These programs provide not only believers but also general visitors with opportunities to experience cultural heritage and build symbolic bonds. Today, pilgrimages have moved beyond the sphere of religious rituals to serve as a vital driver of local economic revitalization. Municipalities compete to develop pilgrimage routes as cultural resources, while religious organizations use them to inspire faith and strengthen communal bonds. In particular, the new religion Daesoon Jinrihoe has actively engaged in constructing sacred sites and pilgrimage routes centered on the birthplace of Kang Jeungsan, the focus of its faith, in cooperation with local governments. Such developments demonstrate that pilgrimages now extend beyond religious boundaries and are closely tied to cultural policy and the tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to examine how pilgrimages in Korea have expanded from a form of religious practice into a resource for cultural heritage and tourism. To this end, it analyzes the construction and sacralization of Daesoon Jinrihoe’s pilgrimage sites and their connections with regional cultural tourism policies, exploring how pilgrimages contribute to both local revitalization and religious solidarity.
