Abstract
It is well known that Max Weber conducted a pioneering study on the advent and development of bureaucracy as an administrative means of domination. However, most of the existing studies on Weber's bureaucracy have paid attention only to the organizational structure and patterned behaviors of bureaucrats, making light of how Weber conceived the bureaucrats as a human agency. This study, based on Weber's idea of human beings as hermeneutical beings, attempts to answer the question whether an individual bureaucrat would be able to build an assertive self by engaging his/her job as a vocation(Beruf). This study sheds light on the fact that Weber already recognized the possibility that bureaucrats could become a personality, which made it possible for them to lead a meaningful life, as well as finding a value in their vocation.
