Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects that gender integration might cause in military. Those effects were classified into three: functional, cultural, and compensatory effects. It compared men soldiers with women soldiers in the changes of recognition as the number of women soldiers increased. It also treated satisfaction and trust as a core moment for military morale. As a result of the analysis, women soldiers pointed out highly positive effects in all issues except promotion. Men soldiers were not so positive as were women soldiers, but positive responses were more than negative ones in men soldiers. There were trade-off relationships between positive and negative effects. Gender integration somewhat decreased traditionally-military values such as confidence in triumph and spiritual strength, but it contributed to cultural improvement in welfare, human rights, and reasonability. Hence, feminine culture, which is generally oriented toward care, nonviolence, and non-oppression, seemed to penetrate into masculine culture. An increase in women was not just tokenism.
