韓國 寺刹壁畵의 保存을 위한 小考 - 영주 부석사 조사당 벽화, 안동 봉정사 대웅전 영산회상벽화를 중심으로 -

14～15세기에 조성된 국보 제46호 영주 부석사 조사당 벽화와 보물 제1614호 벽화안동 봉정사 대웅전 영산회상벽화는 우리나라에서 현존하는 가장 이른 시기의 사찰벽화이다. 이 벽화들을 대상으로 보존을 위한 과학적 조사가 진행되었고 정량적 분석을 통하여 벽체의 입도비율, 재료특성을 확인 하였다. 벽화를 지지하는 벽체에 사용된 재료와 구조는 일반적인 조선시대 사찰벽화와 동일하나 재료의 배합비율이 다른 점과 조직이 치밀하게 구성된 점이 큰 차이점이다. 이 두 사찰벽화가 600년 이상을 보전될 수 있었던 전통기술의 한 면을 발견하였고 장기적 보존을 위한 방안마련의 자료로 활용될 것이다. 부석사의 조사당벽화는 일제강점기인 1916년 조사당과 무량수전 해체 수리 당시 일본인들이 사당 내 벽화 6점을 건물에서 분리하였고 20세기 초, 유럽의 벽화 처리방법인 석고를 이용한 벽체 균열부위보강을 적용하였다. 이후 1980년대에 진행된 벽화 보존처리는 벽화 채색면 보존을 위하여 세척 및 화면보강처리가 진행하였다. 당시의 유행하던 재료들을 적용하였는데, 처리재료인 합성수지의 과다한 농도사용과 처리기술이 미숙하였음을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 처리된 벽화들은 열악한 환경에 보관되어오면서 손상이 가속화되고 있다. 봉정사의 경우, 해체 및 보존처리 이후 지속적 유지관리가 진행되지 않고 있는 상태이다. 두 사찰벽화의 보존을 위한 과거의 행위들을 통하여 시대적 상황의 불가피성과 부족한 인식과 노력들을 발견 할 수 있었다. 또한 사찰벽화의 보존은 가능한 최소한의 처리를 통한 재처리가 용이하도록 하여야 하며 지속적인 관리와 적절한 환경조성이 유지될 때 장기적인 보존이 가능함을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Josadang mural at Buseok Temple in Yeongju, built during the 14~15th century, and mural behind the Buddha at Daewoongjeon of Bongjeong Temple in Andong are the earliest of all Buddhist temple mural paintings that exist to this day. Scientific investigations were carried out for conservation of these mural paintings, and quantitative analysis on wall granularity and material properties was conducted. The materials and structures used in the walls that support the mural paintings are the same as those for the temple mural paintings in the Joseon Dynasty; however the significant difference lies in the mixing ratios of the materials and the structures which are more precise. These two mural paintings have revealed one aspect of the traditional techniques by which the paintings could be preserved for more than 600 years; and it will be used as data for preparing measures for long-term conservation. In 1916 during the Japanese colonial period, the 6 mural paintings of Josadang at Buseok Temple were separated from the buildings by the Japanese, due to deconstruction and renovation on Josadang and Muryangsujeon. At that time, European techniques were applied and the cracks were reinforced by the material called gypsum. Later in the 1980s, mural conservation treatment was carried out in order to preserve the mural painting surface. The materials which were popular at that time were used for cleansing and surface reinforcement; and excessive use of concentration for treating materials and poor treatment execution are evident. Also, the damage is accelerated due to harsh environment. In the case of Bongjeong Temple, the painting is exposed to the humid surroundings without the continuous maintenance after the dismantling and preservation process. Considering the past treatment for conservation of mural paintings of these two temples, the inevitability in terms of the historical situation and the lack of awareness and efforts could be found. Conservation of mural paintings should be made easy for re-treatment through the minimum possible treatment. Continuous management and proper environment for conservation should be ensured for long-term conservation.
