Abstract

The present study aimed to confirm the mediating effect of perceived social support and unconditional self-acception on the relationship between optimism and happiness of youth. The data were collected from 357 middle and high school students, and were analyzed through structural equation modeling. The main research findings were as follow: First, greater optimism was associated with greater unconditional self-acception, greater happiness, and greater perceived social support. In addition, greater perceived social support was related to greater happiness. Second, optimism had an effect on happiness through the partial mediation of perceived social support. Third, optimism did not have effect on happiness through the partial mediation of unconditional self-acception. In summary, optimism of youth had an effect on happiness, directly or through the partial mediation of perceived social support. The significance and limitations of the present study and directions for future research were also discussed.
