초록
This paper compares Korean and English expressions where personification is used for description of an entity without human characteristics in reality. Personification is a major mode of figurative expression widely used in human languages, but the specific source and target domains for personification varies from language to language as personification is closely related to cultural background of each language. Korean, with collectivistic and high context culture, and English, with individualistic and low context culture, have unique linguistic features, not shared with the other language, adopted in almost every aspect of language, thus making it difficult for language learners of either language to master the other language. Personification is one example of such differences that reflect the basic cultural peculiarities as well as syntactic ones. Hopefully, this study will help learners of either language more easily learn the language through understanding the basic cultural differences. (Kyung Hee University)
