초록

Lee, Hye-Kyung. 2009. On the Headlines of English and Korean Political News Articles. Linguistic Research 26(1), 67-87. This paper suggests a contrastive study between the headlines of Korean and English political news articles. Focusing on three aspects in headlines (i.e., formal properties, functional properties and referring expressions), the paper analyzes the collected data comprising 100 Korean headlines and 100 English headlines. The analysis reveals that the two languages employ diverse structures in forming headlines. Although the structures used in the two languages are partially overlapping, the structures are constrained by the limit of the space on the one hand, and by the practiced conventions on the other. As for the functional properties, the Korean headlines carry a wider variety of functions than the English counterparts. This difference is attributed to the frequent use of quotes in the Korean headlines. In addition, the paper shows that the ways the two languages employ expressions referring to politicians are constrained by or have a bearing on the naming practice in each linguistic or cultural community.
