Abstract

This article deals with the problem of making the Korean classical novels be read popularly by focusing on two questions. One is the question of 'who are the main group to read the classical novels?' and another is that of 'what are the ways to make the group broader and intensify the reading effect and usefulness?'. At any time, there are few people to know the value of classics and find out them in person. So it is necessary to educate people for reading the classics and to rewrite them. In case of the classical novels, it's important to translate them keeping within bounds of original works and rewrite them in order to make people read easily. These days the main group to read the classical novels is composed of university students majoring the Korean literature and the middle and high school students. In order to make them appreciate the classical novels with amusement and soundness, it is necessary to rewrite the classics, especially to divide the group several grades and adapt the classics according to age. That is to say, we need to rewrite and adapt words, sentences, quantity, communicating ways of the classical novels according to each group of the elementary, middle, high school and the university students, common people, foreigners, overseas Koreans. Therefore the person who translate and adapt the classics can't help worrying about the problem between preserving the original works and daring to rewrite them. So this article uses Choon Hyang Jeon as an example and examined the various versions for children, juveniles and adults. This study investigates their characters and ways of rewriting and adapting with comparing merits and demerits of real versions and presents the necessity of clarifying ways of good and perfect rewriting.
