Abstract
Agnieszka Holland’s film, The Secret Garden(1993) is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s novel, The Secret Garden(1911). Holland’s film, The Secret Garden is a family film which is sold as a video and highly acclaimed for both its cinematic quality and its popularity. This film has a theme of main characters cured in the garden, the maternal space. If so, what is it the text attracts or does not attract the director? Of course there are differences when a work in one medium is translated into another, especially when a lengthy and complex novel is made into film with its time limitation and emphasis on the visual. They need to collapse and rearrange plot elements, particularly at the beginning, to give necessary information and get on with the story which could make the differences between the two media a lot. Holland's The Secret Garden has a plot of the orignal text but there exist different elements between two media. These major different elements are explored in this study: the opening scenes, the description of Mary and Colin, absence of mother, garden and its magic and the cure and the importance of mary in the conclusion.
