Abstract
In many ways, Lois Lowry seems to reproduce Moore's "Utopianism" in The Giver. However, it expresses “futuristic Utopia” and “communal Utopia” that are powerful but still appealing to the readers. What we know about the “community” and “family” are significantly different from reality. In this community, diversity is deconstructed and freedom is lost and controlled, so disciplines and rules dominate the community strictly. Within the community that values sameness, there is no room for diversity and individuality. In addition, Lowry deconstructs the family in the novel and describes it as a unit of family. Lowry says that she describes a very safe and comfortable community, but as the story progresses, the community creates many controversial and provocative issues. This community feels like a 'dystopian' world with no love, no color, no emotion, no choice. In The Giver, Lowry seems to be sarcastic about the ideal of Utopia by deconstructing “Utopianism" with transcendental mystery and an atmosphere of scientific imagination. Readers expect a message of inspiration and imaginative hope from the word ‘utopia', she is getting rid of such optimistic expectations of us throughout the book. It seems to paradoxically present the contradiction of 'Utopianism' by deconstructing the ‘Utopia.’
