초록

본 연구는 E. B. White의 『샬롯의 거미줄』에 작가의 삶이 어떻게 반영되어 있는지 분석한 연구이다. 연구방법으로 미국 올비스 픽터스상을 수상한 멜리사 스위트(Melissa Sweet)의 어린이 논픽션 『대단한 작가! E. B. White의 이야기』(Some Writer! The Story of E .B. White)와 E. B. White의 동물판타지 소설 『샬롯의 거미줄』의 짝지어 읽기를 실행했다. 연구결과 E. B. White의 삶을 다음과 같이 다섯 가지로 정리해보았다: 1. 동물을 사랑한 삶, 2. 가족과 친구들의 사랑을 받은 삶, 3. 자연 속에서의 시간을 즐긴 삶, 4. 자유와 모험을 즐긴 삶, 5. 글을 사랑한 삶. 연구자는 각 주제별로 E. B. White의 삶과 그의 인생철학이 『샬롯의 거미줄』에 어떻게 반영되었는지 논의했다. 독자가 E. B. White의 삶에 대해 알게 된다면 작가의 삶과 그의 작품을 연결함으로써 『샬롯의 거미줄』을 더욱 심도 있게 감상하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

Abstract

This study is an analysis of how E. B. White‘s life is reflected in his children’s book, Charlotte’s Web. The research employed a paired reading approach, combining Melissa Sweet’s award-winning nonfiction children’s book, Some Writer! The Story of E. B. White and E. B. White’s animal fantasy, Charlotte’s Web. The findings of the study categorized E. B. White’s life into five aspects: 1. A life devoted to the love of animals, 2. A life embraced by the love of family and friends, 3. A life enjoyed in the embrace of nature, 4. a life filled with freedom and adventures, and 5. A life dedicated to the love of writing. In each section, it is discussed how E. B. White’s life and his philosophy of life are portrayed in Charlotte’s Web. Understanding E. B. White’s life may help readers appreciate Charlotte’s Web on a deeper level by establishing connections between the author’s life and his work.
