본 논문은 아동 소설로 시작하여 글로벌 문화 현상으로 진화한 J.K.롤링의 『해리 포터』 시리즈, 특히 영화 시리즈(2001-2011)에 중점을 두어 그 특징을 연구한다. 이 시리즈는 아동 및 청소년 장르인 동시에 판타지 장르에 해당하기도 하는데, 본 논문은 이 시리즈가 어떠한 방식으로 다양한 미디어 프랜차이즈를 만들어내고 이른바 전통과 저항의 교차점에 존재함으로써 장기적인 인기를 유지해올 수 있었는지 살펴보고자 한다. 첫째, 이 시리즈가 배경과 주제에 있어 강력한 영국적 특성을 갖고 있으며 그를 통해 다른 청소년 영화와 차별화되는 '로컬 영화' 또는 ‘헤리티지 영화’로 분류될 수 있음을 밝힌다. 둘째, 그럼에도 이 시리즈가 청소년 장르의 가장 중요한 요소인 저항과 계몽을 다루는 본격적인 '청소년 영화'임을 밝히고자 한다. 이렇게 지역적인 동시에 보편적인 주제 덕분에 이 시리즈는 전 세계 청소년 관객에게 공감을 얻을 수 있었던 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 아동 및 청소년 관련 문화가 점차 사라지고 있는 한국에서 창의적이고 흥미로운 콘텐츠를 제작할 수 있는 보다 효과적인 방법을 찾는 데 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다. 이러한 콘텐츠는 젊은 관객들에게 위안과 기쁨을 가져다 줄 수 있고 동시에 글로벌 시장에서 지속적인 호소력을 얻으며 성공을 거둘 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, which started as a children’s novel and evolved into a global cultural phenomenon, with a particular focus on the film series(2001-2011). The series belong to both children’s and youth genre as well as a fantasy genre. This study aims to explore how the series have influenced various media franchises and maintained their long-term popularity by existing at the intersection of tradition and resistance. First, this study argues that the series qualify as a ‘local film’ or Heritage Film, setting themselves apart from other young adult films through their strong British characteristics, such as the settings and themes. Second, it reveals that the series function as full-fledged ‘young adult film’ by addressing key elements of the youth genre: resistance and enlightenment. These universal themes allow the series to resonate with youth audiences around the world. The insights from this study may provide valuable guidance for South Korea, where children’s and youth films and related cultures are gradually disappearing, find more effective ways to produce creative and interesting content. Such content could bring comfort and joy to young audiences, achieve lasting global appeal, and secure enduring success in the international market.
