Abstract

THE MULTIPLICITY AND HISTORICITY IN THE ADAPTATION OF NOVEL, FIVE ADAPTED NOVELS OF LES MISÉRABLES; PARK, JIN-YOUNG The multi-adaptation of Victor-Marie Hugo's Les Misérables is the epitome which reflects the historical characteristics of Korean modern adapted novel concentratedly. Les Misérables was adapted five times from 1910 to 1923. Each adaptational process had so different base and heterogeneous sense that it should be dealt with on a historical view through examining the multi-dimensional elements like style, media, and language. The purpose of this study is to clarify the way of adaptation in these novels and evaluate their positions in the history of Korean modern novel. The two adapted novels by Choi Nam-Seon were published in modern general magazines. One, adapted from Hara Hoistuan's extract, was the metaphrase of political novel in Meiji era as well as a sort of textbook. But the other was condensed into high-power digest and became a directing post to Western modern novel. Min Tae-Won's Ae-Sa was ‘readaptation’ from Kuroiwa Ruiko's. The adapted novels were the pivot of serial novels printed on Mae-Il-Sin-Bo in 1910's, and Ae-Sa was the summit of successive adapted novels. Its achievement was connected directly with historical prospects of modern novels before and after Mu-Jeong. Finally Hong Nan-Pa adapted Kuroiwa Ruiko's in book form twice. His novels were adapted into different languages; different characters, word-formations, and sentences. Therefore his adaptations showed the aspects of competition and intervention among dictions of modern novel in early 1920's. Above all they proved a profound meaning of ‘Korean sentence composed with only Hangeul’ in the history of Korean modern novel.
