〈시라카바파〉의 작가 무샤노코지 사네아쓰의 대표작 「우정」은 한 여자를 둘러싸고 사랑과 우정 사이에서 고뇌하는 청춘들의 갈등을 표현한 작품이다. 연애라는 주제에다 뛰어난 감정 묘사와 세밀한 심리 묘사를 곁들였으며, 거기에 치밀한 형식까지 갖춰, 이 작품은 당시 젊은이들 사이에서 많은 인기를 얻었으며, 문단에서도 높은 평가를 받았다. 따라서 이제까지 이 작품은 주로 연애소설 혹은 청춘소설이라는 관점에서 다루어져 왔다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 스포츠에 초점을 맞춤으로 해서 이제까지와는 다른 각도에서 이 작품을 분석해 보고자 했다. 「우정」에는 탁구 시합을 하는 장면이 두 차례에 걸쳐 상세한 묘사와 더불어 상당한 비중으로 삽입되어 있다. 그만큼 탁구는 이 작품에서 중요한 소재로서의 기능을 하며, 스토리 전개에 있어서도 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 또한 서핑이나 해수욕과 같은 스포츠를 하는 장면 역시 매우 구체적이고 비중 있게 다루어져 있다. 따라서 〈스포츠소설〉이라는 관점에서 이 작품을 분석함으로써, 이제까지의 연구에서는 볼 수 없었던 새로운 면을 밝혀내고자 노력했다. 그 결과 「우정」에서의 스포츠 장면은 소설의 전개 방향에 대한 일종의 암시를 독자들에게 던져주는 역할을 한다는 것을 확인할 수가 있었다. 즉 「우정」에서는 효과적인 심리묘사와 소설의 전개 방향에 대한 암시를 위해 스포츠가 적절히 활용되어 있다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Friendship, a significant work of Mushanokoji Saneatsu who wrote The School of Sirakaba, elaborates conflicts of youths who anguish between love and friendship.This work became very popular among the youths of the time and it also had been highly estimated in the literary world, for its theme of love, brilliant elaboration of emotion, and delicate mind expression. Thus, this novel had been dealt with the viewpoint of love or youth. However, this paper focuses on sports to analyze the novel from another point of view. Friendship includes two significant scenes of playing table tennis with detailed illustration. It means that table tennis plays an important role as one of main themes and as important meaning for the story line. Hence, investigating the work from the area of 'sports novel', I tried to excavate new aspect, not having discovered in other research. As a result, I found that the sports scenes in Friendship give clue for the story development to the reader. In other words, Friendship properly uses sports for effective eleboration of emotion and clue for story development.
