본 연구는 자유전공학부의 전공탐색 기능을 실질적으로 지원할 수 있는 교양교육과정의 방향성과 운영 방안 제시를 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 기존에 자유전공학부를 운영해 온 대학들과 최근에 신설한 대학들의 운영 실태를 비교하여, 각 대학의 전공탐색 지원 체계를 분석하였다. K대학교는 ‘기반교양’ 신설과 ‘전공탐색’ 영역을 구축하며 자유전공학부 운영을 위해 전공탐색의 중요성을 드러냈다. 그리고 각 학과의 전임교원들에게 기반교양을 신규 개발하게 함으로써 전공선택 전에 관심 학과의 교수를 접하여 관련 학과의 정보를 얻을 수 있도록 하였다. 이렇게 개발된 교양 교과목을 1학기동안 운영한 결과를 중심으로 교과목 구성과 학습자 반응을 구체적으로 분석하고, 기반교양에 대한 학생들의 만족도와 전공선택 과정에서의 교육 효과를 파악하였다. 그 결과, 기반교양 교과목이 학생들의 전공선택과 진로탐색 과정에 실질적으로 기여하고 있으며, 특히 학습자의 흥미･적성과 같은 내적 동기가 인문사회계열의 기초 학문 중심의 수업 경험과 유기적으로 연결되었음을 발견하였다. 이는 기반교양 교과목이 단순한 기초 지식 전달을 넘어, 다양한 학문적 관점에서 인간과 사회를 이해하고 분석할 수 있도록 돕는 ‘전공탐색’ 기반 교양교육의 출발점으로 기능하고 있다는 점에서 교육적 의미가 크다고 하겠다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 자유전공학부의 효과적이고 더 나은 운영을 위한 몇 가지 방안을 제안하고자 한다. 첫째, 자유전공학부 학생들을 위한 교양 교과목의 지속적인 개발이 요구된다. 둘째, 자유전공학부 학생들을 위한 비교과프로그램의 순환적 구조 운영이다. 셋째, 자유전공학부의 독립적인 전공 운영과 더불어, 일원적 관리 체계 도입을 제안하고자 한다.
Abstract
The study aims to propose effective directions and operational strategies for the general education curriculum to more effectively support the major exploration function within the College of Liberal Studies. To achieve this, it conducts a comparative analysis between universities with established Colleges of Liberal Studies and those with recently launched programs, analyzing their respective systems for supporting students’ exploration of academic majors. K University established a “Foundational General Education” category and constructed a “Major Exploration” domain, highlighting the importance of major exploration in the operation of its College of Liberal Studies. In addition, full-time professors from each department were tasked with developing new foundational courses, which enabled students to engage directly with professors from prospective majors and gain relevant disciplinary information before formally declaring their fields of study. The courses contributed not only to students’ processes of major selection and career exploration but also revealed a connection between their intrinsic motivations and early academic experiences. Accordingly, the courses provided a foundation for exploration-oriented liberal education that extends beyond basic knowledge transfer. Based on these analyses, the study presents several recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of the College of Liberal Studies. It highlights the need for the continuous development of general education courses designed for Liberal Studies students, recommends the cyclical operation of co-curricular programs, and proposes introducing an integrated management system in addition to the independent operation of majors within the College of Liberal Studies.
