본 논문의 목적은 러시아 최초의 근대적 자연과학자인 미하일 로모노소프(1711-1765)가 어떻게 ‘과학적 항해의 창시자’로서 북극해 항로의 개척에 기여했는지를 밝히는 데 있다. 북극 지역에서 성장한 자신의 경험을 바탕으로, 로모노소프는 북극해를 따라 동아시아와 북아메리카로 이어지는 항로를 탐험하기 위해 많은 과학 연구를 수행했고 이론적 토대를 마련했다. 북극에 대한 그의 연구는 북극광의 원인, 북극해 얼음의 분류와 특성, 빙산의 기원, 얼음의 이동과 해류에 대한 바람의 역할, 해수 순환이 기후에 미치는 영향 등을 포괄한다. 로모노소프는 북극해 항로 개척을 위한 이론 작업에 몰두했을 뿐만 아니라, 천문 관측과 항해에 필요한 도구들을 발명하고 탐험을 위한 지도를 제작했다. 그는 또한 원정대의 교육을 비롯해 모든 준비과정에 관여했다. 로모노소프가 사망한 지 약 한 달 후에 실행된 치차고프 원정대의 제1차 항해와 이듬해의 제2차 항해는 북극해의 얼음에 막혀 완수되지 못했다. 그러나 로모노소프가 자신의 과학 이론을 기반으로 고위도 항해를 최초로 조직했고 북극해의 자연 현상과 해양 환경의 많은 특징들을 밝혀냈다는 점에서, 그의 프로젝트는 큰 의의를 갖는다. 또한, 그가 제시한 여러 이론들은 후대의 과학자들과 탐험가들에 의해 그 타당성과 가치를 인정받고 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to elucidate how Mikhail Lomonosov (1711-1765), the first Russian natural scientist, contributed to the opening of the Arctic sea routes as the “founder of the scientific voyage.” Based on his own childhood experiences in the Arctic region, Lomonosov conducted many scientific studies and established a theoretical foundation for exploring routes along the Arctic Ocean to East Asia and also to North America. His studies on the Arctic encompass the cause of the Northern Lights, the classification and characteristics of the Arctic sea ice, the origin of icebergs, the role of wind in iceberg migration and ocean currents, and the effect of seawater circulations on climate. In addition to pioneering works on Arctic sea routes, Lomonosov also invented tools for astronomical observation and navigation and produced maps for exploration. He was also involved in every process of expedition preparation including the training of expedition members. The first Chichagov’s expedition, conducted about a month later after Lomonosov’s death, and the second in the following year, were blocked by ice in the Arctic Ocean and did not complete. However, his project deserves great significance in that for the first time Lomonosov organized high latitude voyages based on his scientific theories and revealed many features of natural phenomena and the marine environment of the Arctic Ocean. Also, many of his proposed theories are recognized for their validity and value by later scientists and explorers.
