Abstract
This article investigates the evolution of the Buryat people’s Buddhist New Year celebration, known as ‘Sagaalgan’, has changed over time, as well as the factors that have influenced these changes. In the distant past, the Buryats, who led a nomadic lifestyle, established a traditional calender based on the biological cycles of livestock and the nomadic period, which guided their New Year festivities. However, in the 13th century, the Buryat people began observing the New Year on a different date adopting the Mongolian calender. Subsequently, in the 17th century, the religious influence of Buddhism transformed Sagaalgan into a predominately religious observance. During the Soviet era, Sagaalgan lost its status as a Buddhist holiday and instead persisted as a folk celebration or traditional custom within Buryat families. However, with the emergence of a strengthened ethnic identity surrounding the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Buddhism regained its significance as a defining aspect of Buryat culure. As a result, Sagaalgan was reinstated as both a Buddhist holiday and an ethnic festival. Sagaalgan, which fostered solidarity among Buryat clans, provided on opportunity to reinforce the importance of family and kinship ties, even during the Soviet era. Today, it continues to play a meaningful role in strengthening the unity of the Buryat people. As Sagaalgan evolves into a national holiday that attracts citizens of the Buryat Republic, irrespective of their ethnicities, the ethnic boundaries of this New Year celebration become somewhat blurred. From a religious perspective, Sagaalgan initially involved primitive religious rites, transformed into a Buddhist holiday, and later transitioned to a secular observance during the Soviet era. Nowadays, it has once again developed into a religious holiday, while simultaneously serving as a secular festival enjoyed by all. The fundamental purpose of a holiday is to bring together all the participants, and today, Sagaalgan can be said to be fully fulfill its original role as a unifying celebration at various levels, including the family, ethnicity, and civil society.
