Abstract
In this study, we investigate the effects of the 4th industrial revolution (IR) ICT technologies such as big data, IoT, block chain, etc. in their business operation, their investments in innovation, and their technology innovation competence on their employment level, with comparisons between IR firms and non-IR firms in Korea. We use the survey data of MDIS, provided by the Korean Bureau of Statistics from 2006 to 2017, and KIS-Value financial data, apply fixed effects panel model and two-stage propensity score matching (PSM) methods with logit models in the first stage to control for endogeneity problems among the corporate trait factors, and find followings. First, the industrial revolution (IR) technology shows a statistically significant positive and larger effect on employment in Korea. Second, there exists a statistically non-significant negative effect of innovation investments, for IR firms, but a statistically significant positive effect of innovation investments for non-IR firms, on their employment level. Third, there exists a statistically significant positive effect of innovation competence for both IR firms and non-IR firms, on their employment level. Fourth, the effects on employment are statistically significant positive for manufacturing firms and ICT firms that adopted IR technologies, but not statistically significant for such firms in finance industry.
