Abstract

Studies on social networks mainly focus on the effects of such networks. However, this study focused on the antecedents of social relationship characteristics. Social relationships were classified as positive or negative relationships at the individual level. Personality factors included agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism. Similarity was characterized as including value similarity, age similarity, geographical proximity, job similarity, and common schools. The influence of these factors was tested. The results of the survey of 385 Korean Air Force pilots revealed that the major antecedents of negative relationships included neuroticism and geographical proximity, while the antecedents of positive relationships included agreeableness, geographical proximity, job similarity, and common schools. The study provided recommendations for further studies based on the results.
