Abstract
Purpose - South Korea began portfolio management in the early 2000s. Over the past two decades, the prolonged low-interest and low-inflation environment has resulted in limited research on inflation and asset management. Against this backdrop, this study analyzed the relationship between inflation and asset returns from the perspective of investment horizons by applying the GARCH and Mean Shortfall Risk Optimization models. Findings - The analysis found a strong negative correlation between inflation and the returns of domestic and foreign equities, bonds, and real estate in the short term under conditions of high macroeconomic volatility. However, this linkage improved with investment horizons exceeding five years. An examination of inflation-hedging assets by investment horizon revealed that commodities were most effective for horizons under one year. For horizons beyond five years, domestic bonds were effective, while for those over ten years, foreign bonds, including inflation-linked bonds, demonstrated hedging effects comparable to domestic bonds. For investment horizons exceeding 20 years, foreign equities emerged as the most suitable inflation-hedging asset for investors targeting a real return of over 3%. Implications - The findings suggest that longer investment horizons not only strengthen the relationship between inflation and asset returns but also broaden the range of asset classes available to preserve real value.
