Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between globalization, income level, and renewable energy consumption in Korea, China, and Japan using panel and country-level time series data from 1990 to 2020. Employing fixed effects, OLS, Granger causality, and impulse response functions, the analysis yields several key findings. First, panel results show that income, capital accumulation, and globalization significantly promote renewable energy consumption, with a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between income level and renewable energy use. Second, country-specific analyses reveal that while all three countries exhibit a positive link between income and renewable energy consumption, Korea and Japan show higher sensitivity to globalization. Third, Granger causality tests confirm a unidirectional relationship from income level, capital, and globalization to renewable energy consumption. Notably, impulse response analysis indicates that while Korea and Japan exhibit similar short-term reactions to growth shocks, China's response is delayed but sustained in the long run. These findings highlight the importance of integrating renewable energy cooperation—particularly in technology and production—into future FTA negotiations among the three countries.
