Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand research trends in perception of crowding as published in Korean tourism journals. A total of 52 articles, published by 2023 from Korean academic journals in the field of tourism, were selected for analysis. Content analysis was conducted based on five categories: date of publication, research setting, unit of analysis, research methodology, and research topics. The analysis revealed that research on the perception of crowding in the domestic tourism sector has been continuously conducted from 2000 to 2023, spanning 24 years. However, due to the limited number of studies, research on the perception of crowding is more active overseas than in Korea. Furthermore, compared to other topics, research on perceived crowding in Korea is not receiving much academic attention. Additionally, there was found to be a lack of diversity in research settings, units of analysis, research methodologies, and research topics. Based on the analysis results, the characteristics and limitations of research on perceived crowding were derived and research directions were proposed regarding the types of perceived crowding research that should be conducted in the tourism field to address the crowding problem.
