Abstract

This study analyzes how the Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政園), located in Suzhou, Jiangnan, China, spatially embodies the core concepts of Wu Wei (無爲) and Tian Ren He Yi (天人合一) in Daoist philosophy. Designed by Wang Xianchen (王獻臣, 1469~?) during the Ming Dynasty, the garden functions not merely as a landscaped space but as a site where nature and humanity achieve harmony and where philosophical contemplation is realized. This research explores how the garden’s design principles reflect Daoist thought, focusing on its asymmetrical layout following the natural flow, the principle of Wu Wei that minimizes artificial intervention, and the harmonious integration of architecture and landscape. The spatial characteristics of the Humble Administrator’s Garden go beyond aesthetics, functioning as an architectural realization of Daoist philosophy. The major buildings and scenic elements are arranged freely, without a rigid axial alignment, embodying the formation of space in accordance with natural principles as emphasized in Daoism. Furthermore, the garden’s waterways and landscape features are not merely ornamental; rather, they establish a dynamic interaction between humans and nature, forming an integrated, organic relationship. In particular, this study examines the concept of Li Shui (理水)—the management of water—and its connection to Daoist philosophy. By comparing this concept with the Confucian principle of Zhi Shui (治水)—the regulation of water for societal stability—this study argues that the Humble Administrator’s Garden represents a unique Daoist approach to landscape architecture. Additionally, this study highlights the garden’s role as a philosophical space that encapsulates the ideals and intellectual pursuits of the literati of its time, positioning it as a cultural and philosophical heritage. As a significant example of the practical application of Daoist philosophy, this study demonstrates how the Humble Administrator’s Garden materializes the harmonious relationship between nature and humanity. Furthermore, this research provides new insights into the potential integration of Daoist principles into contemporary landscape design and environmental planning, emphasizing the continued relevance of Daoist aesthetics and philosophy in modern spatial practices.
