Abstract
The concept of "Internal Sage and External King (內聖外王)" in the history of Confucianism represents the comprehensive ideology of achieving the moral perfection of the self (內聖) and, based on this foundation, governing the world and humanity (外王). The notion of the “Way of Internal Sage and External King” (內聖外王之道) first appeared in the “All Under Heaven” (天下) chapter of the Zhuangzi and later became systematized within Confucian thought, expanding through classical texts such as The Great Learning (大學), Mencius (孟子), and Xunzi (荀子) to become a central concept in Confucianism. This dual ideal, which emphasizes the integration of moral self-reflection and ideal governance, has long been a subject of philosophical inquiry and debate due to its intrinsic intellectual appeal. However, this study critiques the conventional interpretation that views "External King" merely as the natural outcome of "Internal Sage" and identifies the need for a more nuanced understanding. By engaging in an in-depth analysis of the discussions in The Analects and The Great Learning, this paper seeks to provide a comprehensive reevaluation of the intrinsic logic of the Internal Sage and External King doctrine within the historical context of classical Confucianism. The findings reveal that the Confucian vision of the Internal Sage and External King is not merely a moral-ethical framework but a coherent political-philosophical system that underscores systematic pathways and practical methodologies. While "Internal Sage" serves as a necessary foundation for "External King," the realization of external governance does not occur as an automatic extension of individual moral cultivation. Confucius emphasized that the integration of personal moral self-cultivation, communal ethics, and institutional structures is essential for achieving tangible outcomes in society. This perspective highlights the integrated nature of Confucian thought and its pragmatic orientation toward actionable solutions. In conclusion, the doctrine of the Internal Sage and External King transcends its characterization as a philosophical ideal and should be understood as a Confucian model that seeks realistic possibilities grounded in institutional and historical practices. This perspective demonstrates how Confucianism functions as a mediating framework that connects individual moral development with social harmony, demonstrating its enduring relevance in bridging the realms of morality and politics.
