Abstract
This paper analyzes the reasons for the disappearance of the concept of ‘Heaven’s Mandate (天命, Tianming)’ in Xunzi and its philosophical implications. The Doctrine of the Mean (中庸, Zhongyong) and Mencius (孟子, Mengzi) understood human nature (性, xing) and Tianming on the same level, establishing the basis of moral order as a transcendent command. In contrast, Xunzi, in the chapter ‘Human Nature is Evil (性惡, Xinge)’, completely removes ‘Mandate (命, ming)’ and retains only ‘Heaven (天, tian),’ thereby locating the foundation of morality not in a divine command but in human artifice (僞, wei) and institutional construction. This shift is not merely a theological denial. It is a philosophical attempt to deconstruct the realist foundation of morality and reveal its social and constructive nature. Xunzi does not deny the ontological authority of Heaven, but he rejects the idea that Heaven is a commander that dictates human actions. Heaven is the totality of the natural order that humans can control and utilize, and morality is the normative structure that humans form within that order through learning and institutions. Therefore, Xunzi’s doctrine of inherent evil is not a declaration of human moral incapacity. It can be interpreted as a constructivist position that re-establishes moral subjectivity based on human social practice. This paper investigates how Xunzi's moral philosophy shifts from a transcendent command to constructive practice, focusing on the dethronement of Tianming. It thereby illuminates that Xunzi's thought possesses the character of meta-ethical constructivism, distinguishing it from the Mencian moral realism. This suggests a new Confucian possibility of grasping the foundation of morality within human institutional and historical actions.
