(Mt. Joongwang area located in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon-do)
Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of Quercus mongolica distributed in the deciduous stands at Mt. Joongwang located in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon-do. Quercus. mongolica becomes increasingly dominant towards higher elevation. On steep slopes with a gradient above 30°that are fairly dry, dominance of Q. mongolica was estimated at 24.03% followed by Acer pictum subsp. mono and Acer mandshuricum. In addition, Q. mongolica was positively correlated with Tilia amurensis but negatively correlated with Betula costata, Acer pictum subsp. mono, Ulmus naciniata, Fraxinus mandshurica, Fraxinus rynchophylla, Acer mandshuricum and Cornus controversa. This study found that the distribution of Q. mongolica stands have maintained a relatively stable form for a period of time and will remain dominant by examining the distribution of diameter at breast height. Results also showed that the forest physiognomy of Q. mongolica are composed of more than 60% naturally regenerated stands.
