Abstract

This study was performed to investigate the relationship between influent inocula and postharvest diseases from paprika of cultivation regions and after low temperature storage period. Seven bacteria were isolated from fruit surfaces collected at paprika cultivation regions and major bacterial genera included Bacillus spp., Clavibacter sp. and Pseudomonas spp. The eight bacterial strains were isolated from five weeks stored fruits at low temperature condition, including potentially harmful bacteria to the human. Five fungal isolates were isolated from either two cultivation or storage period and included Alternaria sp., Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium sp., Fusarium sp. and Penicillium sp.. Additionally, Geotrichum sp. was isolated only from the low temperature stored fruits. Six of the fungal isolates were concerned as postharvest decay pathogens on the paprika fruit. However, all bacterial isolates were produced any disease symptoms when the bacteria were inoculated on the fruits. As result, it is suggested that the primary postharvest decay may be occurred by fungi and then secondary decay occurred by saprophytic bacteria during storage of the fruit.
