Abstract
This study attempted to evaluate the sound absorption performance of leaves of Chionanthus retusa, a deciduous broad-leaved treespecies (DBLT) in Korea. The sound-absorbing material was molded by varying the size of the leaf specimen, the thickness of theleaf layer, and the drying conditions using the leaf as the test material. The sound absorption coefficients (SACs) was measured usingthe impedance tube method applied with an intermediate measuring tube (100㎐-3200㎐). The SACs measured under a total of 18 conditionswere analyzed. The SAC of the air-dried leaves condition (MC 13.92%) and the fresh leaf condition (MC 162.04%) improved significantlyas the thickness increased. The SAC was proportional to the increase in density, and in particular, the SAC was higher by the thicknessof the fresh leaf under the condition of high density per volume. In the fresh leaf condition group, the average SAC value of 0.643was observed for 0.5 × 0.5 ㎠ leaf size conditions with a leaf layer thickness of 2.50 ㎝. The maximum SAC value by wavelengthwas observed under the condition of a leaf layer thickness 1.75 ㎝. From the above results, the overall SAC showed higher performancein the wavelength band of 1,000㎐ or higher.
