Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the accuracy of nondestructive tomographic imaging technology used for diagnosing internal defects in large trees, including natural monument old trees and protected trees, and to improve the reliability of diagnostic outcomes. Referring to previous research on large trees, five distinct types of experimental samples were made, each with a diameter of 1.5 meters, and measurements of acoustic velocity and electrical resistance were conducted. The results of the study are as follows. First, the study verified that experimental samples made by bonding multiple logs removed from the field, which maintained a moisture content of 80% and closely resembled living wood, were suitable for tomographic imaging experiments. It was also confirmed that the medium on which the experimental samples were placed-whether wood, soil, or grass-did not affect the imaging results. Second, the study confirmed that the acoustic velocity in the sound portions of large trees ranged between 1,200 and 1,300 m/s. The velocity decreased to 1,000 m/s or lower in areas adjacent to cavities and was measured at 800 m/s within the cavity regions. The results demonstrated that generating an acoustic velocity distribution map enables a reliable diagnosis of sound and defective areas in large trees. Third, measurements of electrical resistance revealed variations in cavity regions. However, due to the substantial fluctuations in resistance values and the inability to obtain measurements in areas where parts of the sapwood were exposed, the applicability of electrical resistance distribution maps was found to be limited. The study concluded that, in the diagnosis of large trees, electrical resistance distribution maps should be used as a supplementary reference along with acoustic velocity distribution maps. The findings verified in this study are expected to improve the reliability of diagnosing internal defects in natural monument old trees and protected trees. As a foundational study, this research was designed to ensure consistency and minimize distortions by using a single type of equipment and standardized experimental samples with uniform shapes. Further research is warranted to improve field applicability by incorporating experiments on cross sections of varying shapes and different defect structures.
