Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the response of soil amendment applications on the tree growth, the nutrient status of soiland foliage of a Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endlicher) plantation established following clearcutting in a pine wilt disease(PWD)-disturbed forest. The tree growth, soil nutrients, and foliage nutrients were monitored for four years (from March 2013 to October2016) with soil amendment treatments [compound fertilizer (N6:P4:K1) with woodchar and sawdust, compound fertilizer (N3:P4:K1) withwoodchar and sawdust, and a non-treated control treatment] in an 8-year-old Japanese cypress plantation. The regression coefficientsof the increments of diameter at breast height (DBH) and height were not significantly different between the soil amendment plots andthe control plots, whereas the coefficients of biomass increments were affected by fertilizer applications suggesting a significant soilamendment treatment effects. The regression coefficients were not significantly different between the two soil amendment treatment plots. Soil respiration, soil temperature, soil water contents, and soil pH were not affected by soil amendment treatments, except for highsoil EC in soil amendment plots. Organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations were lower in the soil amendment plots than inthe control plots, where available phosphorus, exchangeable calcium and magnesium of soils were higher in the soil amendment plots than in the control plots. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in foliage were higher in the soil amendment plots than in the controlplots, but organic carbon concentration was lower in the soil amendment plots than in the control plots. The potassium and magnesiumconcentrations in foliage were not affected by soil amendment treatments. The results suggest that soil amendment treatments couldbe used to enhance the tree biomass and soil nutrient availability in PWD-disturbed forests
